Hi Jan, Thanks for your comment. In my view, concept maps are not necessarily hierarchical. I view them mainly as directed graphs, i.e., any kind of connection between a number of nodes. Arguable, you may see a tendency to create hierarchical concept maps, but that's probably because it is a convenient way to organize a lot of knowledge ;-)
